Mysore is situated in the state of Karnataka and its name is derived from Mysooru which means Mahishasurana ooru in Kannada. According to a legend, the gods and goddesses prayed to Goddess Parvathi to rescue them from Mahishasura, a cruel demon who had ruled the area. Goddess Parvathi, in the form of Chamundeshwari killed the demon on a hilltop called Chamundi Hill. The city gets its name from the demon.


The city of Mysore offers a lot to see for the tourist of varied interests of religious, historical and cultural significance. Mysore Palace, Brindavan Gardens, Gumbaz, Chamundeswari Temple, Srirangapatnam Fort, Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary, St. Philomena’s Church and Jama Masjid are some of the important tourist hubs. Mysore Palace is a great palace of ancient history. The magnificent palace with illumination is a beautiful sight on Sundays. Brindavan Gardens is a garden with varied hues and lawns. The dancing fountain is a specialty of the gardens.

Mysore has its own railway station which connects trains to all the major southern cities. Karnataka State Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses are available to various cities from here. The best time to visit the city is from September to March.
