Mysore is situated in the state of Karnataka and its name is derived from Mysooru which means Mahishasurana ooru in Kannada. According to a legend, the gods and goddesses prayed to Goddess Parvathi to rescue them from Mahishasura, a cruel demon who had ruled the area. Goddess Parvathi, in the form of Chamundeshwari killed the demon on a hilltop called Chamundi Hill. The city gets its name from the demon.
The city of Mysore offers a lot to see for the tourist of varied interests of religious, historical and cultural significance. The best time to visit the city is from September to March.
